Tattoo Before and Aftercare
To prepare for getting a tattoo:
Research and choose a suitable tattoo artist: Take the time to research different tattoo artists at Ink Bunny Tattoo. Choose an artist whose style and work align with your desired tattoo.
Decide on your tattoo design and placement: Have a clear idea of the design you want and where you want it placed on your body. Consider factors like visibility, size, and how it will complement your body's shape.
Communicate with your tattoo artist: Schedule a consultation with your chosen tattoo artist to discuss your design, placement, and any specific details you want to incorporate. Openly communicate your expectations, and listen to their professional advice and suggestions.
Take care of your skin: Ensure your skin is in good condition before getting a tattoo. Stay hydrated, maintain a healthy diet, and moisturize the area where you plan to get tattooed. Avoid excessive sun exposure or tanning, as it can affect the quality of the tattoo and healing process.
Get a good night's sleep: Prioritize a full night's rest before your tattoo appointment. Being well-rested will help you stay calm and comfortable during the session.
Stay hydrated and eat a good meal: Drink plenty of water and eat a nutritious meal before your tattoo appointment. It will help you maintain your energy levels and minimize the risk of lightheadedness or dizziness.
Dress comfortably: Wear loose and comfortable clothing that provides easy access to the area where you'll be getting tattooed. This will allow the artist to work more efficiently and prevent any irritation to the fresh tattoo afterward.
Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications: Refrain from consuming alcohol or taking blood-thinning medications before your tattoo appointment. These substances can increase bleeding during the process and affect the tattoo's outcome.
Prepare mentally: Getting a tattoo can be a mix of excitement and nervousness. Take some time to mentally prepare yourself for the process. Practice deep breathing techniques or meditation to help you relax during the tattoo session.
Follow any specific instructions provided by your tattoo artist: Your tattoo artist may have additional instructions or preparations specific to their process. Listen carefully to their guidance and follow their recommendations to ensure the best possible tattoo experience.
Remember, getting a tattoo is a personal decision, so take your time to prepare and make sure you're fully comfortable before proceeding.

Proper aftercare is essential to ensure the healing and longevity of a tattoo. Here are some general guidelines to follow:
Leave the bandage on for a few hours: Your tattoo artist will typically cover the tattoo with a sterile bandage or wrap. Keep it on for the recommended time, usually around 2-4 hours, to protect the tattoo from airborne bacteria. (Tattoos Covered in Saniderm bandage may remain covered for 3-5 days.)
Wash your hands: Before touching or cleaning your tattoo, make sure your hands are clean to minimize the risk of infection.
Gently clean the tattoo: After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattooed area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. ( Cetaphil is my preference.) Avoid scrubbing the tattoo aggressively, as it can cause damage. Use your clean hands or disposable gloves to gently cleanse the area.
Pat dry with a clean paper towel: After washing, pat the tattoo gently with a clean, disposable paper towel or let it air dry. Avoid rubbing the area, as it can irritate the skin.
Apply a thin layer of ointment or moisturizer: Once the tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment or a fragrance-free, gentle moisturizer recommended by your tattoo artist. Be cautious not to overapply, as too much ointment can suffocate the tattoo and hinder the healing process.
Avoid picking or scratching: Resist the urge to pick, scratch, or peel the scabs that form on the tattooed area. Doing so can lead to scarring and affect the quality of the healed tattoo.
Avoid excessive moisture and soaking: While your tattoo is healing, avoid prolonged exposure to water, such as swimming, soaking in hot tubs, or taking long showers. Excessive moisture can soften scabs and prolong the healing process.
Protect from direct sunlight: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight during the healing process, as UV rays can fade the ink and irritate the skin. If you need to be in the sun, apply a high SPF sunscreen (30+), and consider covering the tattoo with clothing or a bandage.
Wear loose, breathable clothing: Opt for loose-fitting clothes made from breathable fabrics to allow airflow to the tattooed area. Tight clothing can rub against the tattoo and cause irritation.
Avoid intense physical activities: Refrain from engaging in strenuous activities that may cause excessive sweating, friction, or strain on the tattooed area. Sweat and excessive movement can disrupt the healing process and lead to complications.
Follow your artist's instructions: Your tattoo artist may provide specific aftercare instructions based on your tattoo and their expertise. Always follow their advice and reach out to them if you have any concerns or questions during the healing process.
Remember, every tattoo and person's healing process is unique, so it's crucial to consult with your tattoo artist for personalized aftercare instructions. Follow these general guidelines and be patient, as the complete healing process can take several weeks.
